Progress not Perfection

Sometimes I like to reflect on how my skills as a painter are progressing. The best way for me to see the changes is to look at my paintings by year, and notice what changes. Here are some paintings for you to see, by year.

Notice any changes along the way? Patterns?

I notice that I like to paint things in threes! Three people, three garlic, three trees, etc.

I notice that I'm trying new things all the time. I experiment with subject matter, with composition, with color, with brush work. Sometimes a painting can look dramatically different from my other work. And I like that! I never want to get too comfortable with doing the same thing over and over.

It is helpful to see the progress over time. It makes me want to learn more, stretch myself, and do more as a painter. I'll never quite be perfect, but that's ok. Let's hope 2019 is a good growth year. I am very excited to be taking a painting workshop with Colley Whisson in the fall.
